Dutch house heads Boris Smith and La Fuente are no strangers to collaborating having performed together for a couple years. Their sets have taken them to high profile festivals such as Solar, Tomorrowland and Sunrise, and on the production tip, they have signed to Spinnin, Wall Recordings, Toolroom and Ultra to name but a few.
With summer dancefloors firmly in mind, the duo got together to create a fresh rework of the smash hit ‘Cada Vez’, for release on the London-based, indie imprint Perfect Havoc. Originally produced by Negrocan in 1999, they have given Cada Vez a modern makeover that packs in fresh Latino house vibes, brass riffs, and the track’s famous vocals, now performed by the in-demand singer / songwriter Mavis Acquah.
Their 2019 version of ‘Cada Vez’ is a summer sizzler with enough colour and energy to erupt dancefloors from Miami to Ibiza. We caught up with La Fuente and Boris to find out how the challenge came about to take on such a classic record…
You’ve taken on quite a challenge reworking such a well-known record. Why chose Cada Vez?
La Fuente: Boris and I have already done a lot musically, we often run into each other in Holland in the house scene. Cada Vez reminds me of summer holidays when I was younger, so when Boris approached me to do a rework it was a no-brainer for us!
Your version is very true to the original yet brought right up to date. Was this intentional?
LF: Yes absolutely, some records have earned their status and that should be honoured. However, we both felt that the record could use some more vibe and hype and we made that happen in our opinion. This record is really meant to be played on the radio.
Do you remember when and where you were when you first heard Cada Vez?
Boris: I’ve been playing this track for years. Cada Vez is one of my favourite all time tracks.
LF: Yes, I heard it on the beach in Italy during vacation with my parents.
How did you come to work with Mavis Acquah? We hear she’s also a talented DJ and MC!
LF: Yes, she’s definitely very talented. We met a couple times over the years during gigs and music sessions. We heard her singing in Portuguese, which suited the track perfectly.
How did you first catch your big break?
Boris: I’ve been DJing for a long time at clubs, pubs and parties. Producing music has always been a big part next to DJing. Last year I had my first big radio hit in Europe and South Africa called ‘Be Yourself’. I’m very proud of this track which set everything in motion for me.
LF: My career has been pretty steady from the start 10 years ago! When I first played at Extrema in Holland, that was a big step though. It all started in my neighbourhood when I was 12 years old, where I played music for neighbours, friends and family. But also, just playing songs for people on my ghetto blaster during holidays on the beach. Music has always been part of my daily life. It grew from there into playing at birthday parties, parties at the hockey club, parties of friends and family in venues and weddings. Eventually the festival scene started to explode, and I exploded as an artist along with that.
What have been your standout gigs?
Boris: Ibiza has been a premier spot for me in the last years with a few resident gigs in clubs like Ushuaïa and Pacha. Also, in The Netherlands I’ve been touring a lot of clubs and festivals like Solar, Amsterdam Open Air and Sunrise Festival.
LF: Something that really made an impression on me was definitely my tour in Vietnam. But other stand out gigs have been the bigger festivals in Holland where large groups of my fans gather and have grown with me during the success of my career – festivals like Solar, 7th Sunday, Wish and Tomorrowland.
Favourite places to play in Ibiza?
Boris: Aside from the amazing beach parties, Ushuaïa Ibiza is a special spot for me.
LF: A couple of years ago I played on a yacht in Ibiza, which I really enjoyed. A few other cool gigs I did later were on top of the ME Hotel, Nikki Beach and Privilege was also awesome. In the future Ushuaïa and Pacha need to be added to these experiences.
Between you, you’ve had millions of track streams, signed to credible labels, had the big boys playing your tunes. What do you want to achieve next?
Boris: For the last two years my focus has been on producing a lot of music and I want to continue to keep the real house music vibe alive.
LF: I really want to keep growing and turn the A-status I’ve achieved in Holland, across Europe and eventually worldwide. Just keep doing what I do best and making people happy by doing so.
Any plans for more collaborations this year?
LF: Not specifically, but new things can always happen. I am currently working on a remix with Diplo and I have some talented guys that are still starting up I really want to support. So plenty of cool stuff in the works!
Boris: I have a cool track coming up with Hardsoul on Perfect Havoc. Next to this I’m releasing a couple of remixes on Armada Music, the first ones will be for Goodluck and Spankox. Then in August I have another solo single coming up.
